An Autumn Collection in Light and Mist

AURORA · Beneath the Northern Sky — A Visual Journey in 28 Images
The aurora has no shape of its own. It borrows them all — a curtain, a crown, a river, a torn opening in the dark — and abandons each one a few seconds later. What we call the northern lights is really an encounter: charged particles from the sun, travelling for days, arriving at the top of the atmosphere and striking oxygen and nitrogen. Green comes from oxygen around a hundred kilometres up; the rare red and violet, higher still, where the air is too thin for most of us to imagine breathing.
